Back to Church Sunday

This week we celebrated Back to Church Sunday and it was a great joy to welcome those who came back to us for this special day. We very much hope to see them again. Moira led the service and helped us to consider why any of us come back to church, whether it is once in a blue moon, or each week. We used the story of Zacheaus to think about how we come together to worship, to share our stories about Him, and to support each other, knowing that in all things, we are surrounded by God's love. We also looked at the three sections of concentrating our thoughts on God, listening to his Word and then doing something, by offering our money to the work of the Church and praying for others. It was lovely that so many stayed for coffee and a chat after service.

Back to Church Sunday

On Sunday 27 September 2009 we invite you to join us at 10.30 am for Back to Church Sunday. This is a national initiative instigated by the Church of England. Churchgoers are encouraged to invite someone they know who used to attend church to come back. Sadly, one of our Thackley friends recently lost her battle against illness; however, she left a wonderful testimony that told how, having eventually agreed to go to church with her friend, she found a loving church family and the peace and love of God. If you’ve been thinking of going to church and never quite made it, then why not join thousands across the country and seize the opportunity offered by Back to Church Sunday. You are warmly invited to join us; a warm welcome awaits you. Just come as you are.

New Web Site

From 1 September 2009 the Woodhouse Grove Circuit or churches ceased to exist and we are now part of the new Bradford North Circuit. As such we have a new Web page at http://www.bradfordnorth.org.uk/thackley.html Please amend your bookmarks.

With sadness ...

We were so sorry to hear last week of the death of our friend Jean. Elaine gave a beautiful testimony of how she had asked Jean to come to church with her and after some time she eventually did. Elaine spoke of how she worried that she may have pushed her friend too much when Jean was crying in the car on the way home; however, they were tears of joy as Jean had found the love of God through a loving, caring church family at Thackley. Today we were equally saddened to hear of the death of another dear friend Eileen. We pray for God's blessing and comfort for all those whose lives were touched by Eileen and Jean, we celebrate their lives and rejoice that they are both now free of suffering and in the loving care of their heavenly father.

The beauty of math

Jackie prepared us for worship this morning by sharing some colourful photographs of her beautiful garden. Martin then led a wonderful service in which we considered stories of Jesus. He used the beauty of math to demonstrate that God's world has pattern and order, and that the wonder of creation is such that it could not have happened by accident. We firstly looked at the parable of the lost sheep and were reminded that we have a responsibility to do all we can to help and support those who are lost to the best of our ability; that may be to refer individuals to those who have the expertise and knowledge that we lack. In this context he referred to the new Bradford Courts Chaplaincy . The second parable was that of the talents. Thackley folk are very familiar with this due to our annual "talents challenge"; however, Martin reminded us that sitting back and doing nothing is not an option; it is our responsibility to have a go and not be surprised that if we are successfu

Church Weekend

We’ve just spent the weekend at Abbott Hall , a Christian Guild hotel, in Grange Over Sands, and what a wonderful weekend it was! We were blessed by good weather, good food and good fellowship. In order to make this happen and so as not to make costs prohibitive, we agreed as a church to raise the funds to cover the children’s accommodation. The young people also played their part in fund-raising. We’ve had a bacon butties and coffee morning, and a beetle drive with pie and pea supper. We’ve baked and bought cakes and we were treated to a wonderful 3-course dinner when the young people turned the church hall into a restaurant; they provided pre-dinner entertainment, waited on us in a most professional manner and the food was sensational. As a result we covered the cost of all 18 children and what a delight it was to have them with us! The weekend was led by Nick Blundell, one of our Circuit ministers, with the overall theme of “Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin”. We looked a

Come dine with us!

What a brilliant night! As part of our fund raising to cover the cost of the children going away with us on our Church Family Weekend to Abbott Hall , our young people turned our church hall into a restaurant for the night. We were greeted at the door and led to the coffee lounge where we were offered a "Thackley Zinger" and enjoyed pre-dinner entertainment provided by Fran playing her clarinet and Ben his trumpet. The meal was fantastic and the waiting service very professional! Here's the menu: Starter Homemade Mackerel Pate served with wholemeal bread Or Homemade American Meatloaf served with wholemeal bread Main Course Fricassee of chicken with a lime sauce served with pine nut and herb couscous and salad Dessert A choice from: Richard's baked cheesecake, Fresh fruit pavlova Apple pie Tea or Coffee Compliments to the chef! Our sincere thanks go to all the young people who had a busy evening laying tables, making salad, serving on, washing up and clearing up. Pa
